About ATAE

Who we are

The Alliance for Transforming African Education (ATAE) is an alliance of nationally governed, African-owned education organisations. It supports African governments to improve their own education and skills systems and it does this through member organisations that already work inside those systems in their own countries.

Across Africa, education reform has often been designed externally, delivered through parallel structures and dependent on outside expertise. Gains made this way have been hard to sustain once funding ends. ATAE therefore supports national organisations that work with ministries and agencies, so that reform is led and owned by the country itself and rooted in its identity, language and values.

ATAE was established in 2026 with two founding members, Lɛ Wi Lan in Sierra Leone and Transforming Teaching, Education & Learning (T-TEL) in Ghana.

The alliance helps members strengthen their technical work, share evidence and experience across borders and run sound financial and operational systems. It is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, registered in Ghana, with a Pan-African remit. Seven Founding Board Members act as custodians of its mission and values.

Our purpose

Why ATAE exists

Governments across Africa increasingly say that lasting reform has to be led and delivered nationally. Support that arrives through short, externally led projects has produced pockets of progress and improvements have often faded once funding ended.

National organisations that sit beside ministries and agencies can keep expertise in the country and build on what each system already has. ATAE exists to make those organisations stronger and to link them with each other, so that Africa's own education expertise reaches further. Over time this creates an education support network rooted in African culture and values.

Our vision

A future where every African nation shapes and sustains an education system rooted in its own identity and values and delivers improved learning outcomes.

Our mission

To strengthen, connect and support national education organisations to work effectively with governments to build capable, accountable and sustainable education systems that improve learning outcomes.

Five values that guide the work

What we do, and what we stop doing, is shaped by these commitments.

Rigour

Evidence, data and professional analysis drive what we do.

Ownership

Reform belongs to governments and to national institutions. We work inside the existing systems.

Openness

We share what we learn, including what works or has not worked, across borders and with partners.

Trust

We earn the confidence of governments through discretion, reliability and delivery over time.

Sustainability

We measure ourselves by the system capability that remains after we leave.
