About Lɛ Wi Lan
Lɛ Wi Lan is a Sierra Leonean not-for-profit that supports the Government of Sierra Leone to strengthen the country's education system. It was established by 17 educationists, most of them Sierra Leonean, who have spent many years working with ministries, schools, districts and teachers. Its Board is chaired by Professor Yatta Kanu.
The organisation builds on the Leh Wi Lan programme, which worked with government for almost a decade to improve secondary education and was funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. As that programme drew to a close, its relationships and knowledge became the base for a Sierra Leonean organisation, registered in 2025, that keeps the expertise in the country.
Its current work centres on Leaders in Teaching Sierra Leone, a government programme led by the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education and the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education, with funding from the Mastercard Foundation. The programme works on school leadership, teacher education, teacher recruitment and teacher motivation.
Lɛ Wi Lan's mandate covers the whole sector, from foundational learning and secondary education to teacher education and technical and vocational education. As a founding member of ATAE it shares what it learns and draws on the experience of other members, with its relationship with government at the centre of the work.
